The hippopotamus protects its skin by secreting a pink oily substance, yuck! This slimy mess keeps the hippos’ skin from drying out and protects them from the affects of the sun.

  1. I went to the zoo, hoping to see the elephants, but I saw the rhino, the pygmy hippopotami, the oranguatans, and the gorillas. I also noticed that the pygmi hippos were shiny too! This article shows that hippos are able to help protect themselves from the sun. Pretty Amazing!
