Have you ever headed out to your favourite beach, lake, or river for a day of fun in the sun, only to be shocked by the amount of garbage that’s lying around? It can really put a damper on your day, but for the animals that live there, all that trash is ruining their homes. That’s why it’s so important that we do what we can to make sure we keep our favourite shorelines clean and healthy!
You might be thinking, “I already do my part by making sure I always pick up my trash when we leave the beach”, but there’s another sneaky source of shoreline scraps that you may not have thought of: fishing leftovers! Not only can animals get tangled in discarded fishing line and nets, they can become seriously injured if they swallow fishing hooks and lures that look like tasty treats. So the next time you head to your favourite fishing hole, keep these tips in mind to make sure you have a responsible day on the water!
This is the most important thing to remember the next time you’re on the water! Make sure you dispose of bait, fishing line, and other materials properly. If you’re using lead weights and jigs, these must be disposed of at your local hazardous waste collection centre.
It’s important to make sure you’re only catching fish that are in season, and that also have a healthy population! Check with your region before you head out so you know what you can and can’t catch.
Did you know that different rods, tackle, and fishing line work best for different fish? That means you should only be fishing with the proper gear designed to catch the fish species that are in season. No matter when you fish, though, you should always try to use non-lead tackle.

The poor animals living there it must be quite hard to be able to live there with all the trash their homework after getting destroyed and for the animals living in the water it’s even worse did you know that there is a mountain of trash floating in the water that was the size of Texas
Wow that’s crazy, I never knew that.
Can these garbage be a problem for reefs?
My dad used to take me fishing a long time ago, but I do not go fishing anymore. No fun! I think I care too much for the fish. My dad goes every once in awhile and I will try to persuade him to use only what he should be fishing with. He catches and only keeps the fish that he knows he is allowed to. He follows the rules. If there is anyone with him, then he makes sure that they do too!
I love to go fishing! I always put them back in the water. They don’t have the necessary brain power, so it is impervious to pain!
But I feel sad for the fish!
And what I said earlier, is only true around 1% of the time. Fish can usually feel lots of pain! 🙁
When you go fishing I do feel bad for the, but I’ve never caught a fish before it’s very rare. When I go fishing we never keep the fish we let them back into the water. And the hooks that we use we make sure the edges are clipped so they don’t get hurt as bad. Or at all.
I hate to see that its so sad
stay safe people
stay home. We need to adopt more animal’s to keep them safe.
If everyone just put their trash where it belongs
I know right. When we were at school and I saw people littering I always told them to pick it up and throw it into the garbage.
I am not happy with that everyone is disrespecting the animals by hurting them with garbage and killing them and taking them from there homes for pictures and body parts
Will we get more missions soon?
That is so sad. People are bad
