What’s the Buzz at the ERC?

At Earth Rangers, we think pollinators are the BEE’S KNEES! They do so much for us and the planet. They help our plants grow and keep our ecosystems healthy. Without them, we wouldn’t have a lot of the fruits and veggies we love.

So how can we thank them for all their hard work? With the Pollinator Power Mission, of course! And that’s exactly what we did at the Earth Rangers Centre (ERC) this summer.

We grabbed our gardening gloves, shovels and sunhats, and put together the best pollinator garden EVER! But we didn’t do it alone. We had some very handy helpers.

They came, they saw, and they helped build our new-and-improved pollinator garden! We recently had our Project Forward event with Tangerine, right here in our own backyard. Rangers of all ages gathered ’round to learn all about pollinators and help plant our pollinator garden!

Pollinators of all kinds were buzzing and fluttering around as our Rangers explored the ERC grounds. They spotted loads of bees and butterflies. Plus, they found lots of pollinator-friendly flowers, like milkweed, bee balm, and cup plants. Native flowers like these are really good for pollinators. They look and smell familiar, and they’re a great place for them to call home and to reproduce.

Once our new garden beds were filled up with soil, our Rangers got to plant more native wildflowers like echinacea, black-eyed Susans, and coreopsis! To top it all off, Rangers got to stamp their handprint along the sides of the new garden beds.

After our pollinating pals were taken care of, we still had a few more friends in mind: our Animal Ambassadors! They love snacking on veggies like peas, squash, eggplant, and zucchini… So we planted seeds so we can harvest them right here at the ERC—there’s nothing like locally-grown produce, am I right? Placing the vegetable plants near our flowers will help make sure the veggies get enough pollination, too. Lots of pollination is the key to growing good food, after all!

We love seeing our Earth Rangers in action! It was an incredible day filled with planting, learning, and smiles. We can’t wait to see all the pollinators that come to visit their new oasis!

Have you ever planted a pollinator garden? How about a veggie garden? We want to know what you’ve planted!

We hope our pollinator garden has inspired you to build you own! Check out the Pollinator Power Mission in the Earth Rangers App to find out more about pollinators and how you can help protect them!

Is there a career in that?

0

I heard the familiar sound of soft footsteps coming down the stairs. I smiled knowing it was my eight-year old son looking to spend a little quiet time with his mom. It was way past his bedtime, but my instinct told me this was a stage he was going through and needed a little extra cuddling.

He always looked a bit sheepish as he asked if he could sit and watch sports with me for a while. My answer was usually, “20 minutes and then back to bed.” It was during Monday night football; he saw a public service announcement appealing for donations to build more wells in Africa. He turned to me and said, “Those kids don’t have clean water to drink? That doesn’t seem right.” He then asked a few rapid fire questions. In the moment, I did my best to explain global environmental challenges in an age appropriate way. He looked thoughtful, and we went back to watching the game. I didn’t realize it at the time but, a small seed was planted that night that grew into a keen interest in environmental issues.

As I watched my son’s passion grow over the years, I wish I knew at the time about the myriad of rewarding careers in the environmental sector. When I saw him gravitate towards climate change and social justice issues, I thought of professions such as a policy advisor, politician or working with a non-governmental organization (NGO). These are wonderful fields, of course, but there are SO many other options that exist. There are degrees in water conservation technology, environmental health, hydrology and conservation science. There’s also drinking water treatment operators, hazardous waste inspectors, sustainability analysts, field epidemiologists, public health officers and the list goes on!

For my son it was clean water, but for many kids, it’s the love of animals that ignites their curiosity and engagement. More often than not, the suggestion for a career working with animals is a veterinarian but again, there is a long list of other exciting options as well. For example, there’s conservation biologists, wildlife rehabilitators, animal nutritionists, animal-assisted therapists, animal researcher and more!

So how do you connect the dots between a child’s passion and possible career options? You can point them in the direction of interesting stories like Leah Pengelly. She’s a biology master’s student conducting research for the University of Manitoba on the impact of noise from shipping traffic on Narwhals in the North. She filmed a behind the scenes video just for Earth Rangers!

Another encouraging development is the growing emphasis on connecting careers with science curricula in elementary schools. It’s becoming a more common teacher prompt during a science class to ask students, “What kind of job do you think would allow you to work with plants, animals, climate change etc?”

When it comes to our kids, it’s always important to remind ourselves, it’s their choice about what interests them. The goal is to find ways to tap into a child’s passion without pressure. My son grew into a teenager that became focused on a lot of other things! His connection to the environment fell lower on his priority list but landing on a career path can be a long and twisty road. He did graduate as an engineer this year. His first job is working on electric cars.

Reusable Water Balloons

Reusable Water Balloons

Time:40 min Difficulty:Easy

Water balloon fights are fun, but all of those balloon scraps they leave behind are not. Try using these DIY reusable water “balloons” instead!

Here’s what you need:

  • An old t-shirt, washcloths, or soft sponges (if you don’t have anything lying around, you can usually find packs of washcloths and sponges at your local dollar store)
  • Rubber bands or twine
  • Scissors
  • A bucket full of water

Here’s how you make it:

Step 1:

Trim your cloth or sponges into 1 inch strips.

Step 2:

Gather a few of your strips and use the twine or rubber bands to tie them together in the middle. You'll want at least 5 strips if you're using cloth, and at least 3 if you're using sponges.

TIP:

Depending on what you have and how many "balloons" you'd like, you could add more strips, too!

Step 3:

Once have a bunch of fluffy bundles, it's time to get outside and try 'em out! Soak your "balloons" in the bucket and have fun!

Once you’ve won your water balloon battle, set them aside to dry so you can keep them for next time!

Quiz: Most Common Shoreline Litter in 2021

Have you ever heard of the Bay of Fundy? It’s between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, smack dab right in the middle between the equator and the North Pole! You can walk on parts of the ocean floor during low tide and explore the shoreline. Even dinosaur bones and loads of fossils have been found there!

It shore is something to see… and plenty of people love to visit. The problem is, not everyone loves picking up after themselves. There’s almost TWO MILLION pieces of junk on the nearby ocean floor!

The Bay of Fundy shoreline. Waves are rolling in toward a cove with reddish-brown sand and large funky cliffs with green coniferous trees on top.

As Earth Rangers, we know that shoreline litter, no matter how small, is a BIG problem. It can ruin habitats and hurt animals. Not to mention microplastics… those release lots of harsh chemicals and are easy for animals to accidentally gobble up.

On the bright side, loads of people are ready help—just like you! Last year, almost 20,000 people took part in Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup and they found lots of litter: almost 70,000 lbs worth!

You’ll never guess what they found… or maybe you will! Learn all about it and put your shoreline-saving knowledge to the test!

Planet-Protecting Powerhouse Micaela

What inspires you to protect the planet? Is it a love of nature? Would you do anything for animals? Or maybe you want to help make the world a better place for the future? For Super Ranger Micaela, it’s all that and more! It all starts with her family…

Both of Micaela’s parents are from small islands. They’ve seen the environment change a lot over their lifetime. Her mum remembers snorkeling through coral reefs that have now disappeared. She remembers playing on beaches that are now covered in invasive seaweed. Sadly, small islands are some of the places hardest hit by climate change.

The good news is that for people on the islands, being eco-friendly is a way of life. They have to keep their garbage low because they have to take it to the dump themselves. They also get money for returning glass and plastic bottles.

All of this made Micaela jump into action! She is part of her school’s Green Team and spends her time on nature walks picking up garbage. Her family brings reusable containers to the store so they don’t have to buy more packaging. They even make their own beeswax wraps instead of using plastic wrap. BUT that’s not all! Micaela’s hoping to put together a recess clean-up!  Very cool, Micaela! Very cool!

Micaela’s words of advice:

I want kids to know that it’s so important to protect the environment because it takes care of us. It provides the clean air we breathe, the water that we drink, and the food that we eat. By taking care of the environment, we take care of ourselves, too.

Those are some wise words. Way to go Micaela!
