How to make your animal ears!

Did You Know?

  • Polar bears are magnificent animals adapted to the cold climate of the Arctic! This means they have many adaptations to help them thrive in this harsh ecosystem including: a thick fur coat that works to absorb as much sunlight as possible for warmth, and bumpy paws with sharp claws to make sure they don’t slip on the icy surfaces of the Arctic.
  • Another name for polar bears is ‘Nanuq’, which is a word in the language of Inuktitut. This word means an animal worthy of great respect, or the ever wandering one, which has symbolic significance in Inuit communities.
  • Polar bears travelling in groups are called “packs” or “sleuths”.
  • The largest threat to polar bears is climate change. Polar bears depend on the climatic conditions of the Arctic to function properly within their ecosystem. Climate change impacts polar regions more significantly than elsewhere in the world, and is causing sea ice, glaciers, and ice sheets to melt at extremely fast rates, eliminating the resources polar bears require to survive

Take Action to Protect Polar Bears

The best way to help polar bears is to conserve their natural habitat - this means taking action to reduce the effects of climate change on the polar regions. Temperatures in the Arctic are rising twice as fast as the global average leaving polar bears stranded on sea ice with less time to hunt and find a mate. Sea ice loss caused by climate change poses the single biggest threat to polar bear populations.

By completing ‘Eco Activity #76: 3 Steps to Keep Cool’, you can focus on three ways to save energy - borrowing a tip from each of our energy conscious missions, like Operation Conservation, Flip the Switch, and Re-set the ‘Stat!  Saving energy helps us combat climate change AND save the polar bears from losing their habitat!

If you would like to take your action a step further, become an Earth Ranger to adopt your very own polar bear! Adopting a polar bear supports researchers in studying the effects of climate change on polar bear populations in order to help them thrive!

Become an Earth Ranger to access the Operation Conservation Mission! This Mission helps to tackle energy waste in the home.  But how does wasting energy affect polar bears?!  When energy is wasted, this means it is generated unnecessarily which then contributes to climate change!
