There’s nothing quite like looking up as snowflakes swirl around and the world becomes a snow globe… so why not make your own to enjoy indoors?! For today’s Eco-Activity, we’ll show you how to make a DIY snow globe!

Want to follow along, e-learning style? Check out the video below!

Here’s what you need:

  • An upcycled mason jar
  • Water
  • Modeling Clay
  • Eco-friendly / Biodegradable glitter
  • Help from an adult

Here’s how it’s done:

1. Clean out the jar and make sure all of the labels are gone.

2. Put your jar through a leak test. Add water, close the lid tightly, and leave it upside-down to make sure that no water gets out.

3. If it passes the test, it’s good to use. Dump the water out and make sure your jar and lid are completely dry.

4. Press a mound of modeling clay to the inside of the lid, making sure it’s secure. Press your figurine firmly in the clay. You don’t want them coming apart in your snow globe!

5. Fill your jar with water almost to the top, leaving space for the figurines on the lid. It’s a good idea to test that it fits before moving on to step 6 to avoid a sparkly mess!

6. Add your glitter, then screw the lid on tightly. For more security, be sure to ask an adult to help you add some hot glue around the rim (caution: lid may get hot!)

7. Flip your jar upside-down, give it a shake, and watch the glitter glide through the water!

Ice cream, anyone? We’ve got the perfect sweet treat for you, featuring a… squirmy surprise?! Don’t worry, we’re only talking about gummy worms! This super easy chocolatey recipe for Worms in Dirt will be ready in the blink of an eye. Don’t blink too much though—these are sure to be gobbled up just as fast!

Psst: Not in the mood for brain freeze? You can use pudding instead of ice cream. Simply follow the instructions on a pack of instant pudding mix, then follow these same steps for your Worms in Dirt!

Here’s how you make it:

1. First, you’ll need to prepare your “dirt”. Remove the cream from inside your cookies and put the cookie pieces into a sealable bag (bonus points if you reuse it later). Crush up the cookie pieces using a rolling pin. TIP: don’t have a rolling pin? You can crumble them up with your hands!

2. Time to assemble your terrarium-style treats! Fill up your cups by layering the ice cream, cookie crumbs, and gummy worms. Of course, you could make one big mud pit for your worms, instead!

3. Assemble the rest of the cups however you’d like!

4. If you’re making these ahead of time, place them in the freezer until they’re ready to be enjoyed.

That’s it—your super easy sweet treats are ready to go!

Did you know it would take more than 33 years to walk along all of Canada’s coastlines? That SHORE is a long time! At 243,000 km long, Canada’s shores have 3 oceans that meet around them. That’s why it’s so important to keep things clean for all the animals and plant life that call our shorelines home. For today’s Eco-Activity, we challenge you to get out there for a litter pick-up day!

Gather a crew and pick your favourite shoreline to clean up. Don’t live near a lake or ocean? You can clean up around a river, stream, or pond—anywhere with water!

Here’s what you’ll need for your clean-up adventure:

Make sure to always ask for help with sharp objects or if you see something you’re not so sure about. Safety first!

While you’re out there, here are some fun ways to make things interesting:

Trash and Tunes

For this game, you’ll want to make small teams that each have an adult. Each team chooses their own area for the game. Pick your favorite song, press play, and see who collects the most trash by the time the music stops! You can keep going for as many rounds as you’d like.

Speed Sorting

You’ve collected a bunch of litter and have been a good help to the waterways around you. While you’re at it, might as well recycle what you can instead of sending all that litter to the landfill! How about a game of speed sorting to finish the day? You can set categories like plastics, papers, metals, electronics, and trash. See who can sort the most items in 1 minute!

Trash Tally

Use this tally chart to keep track of what you find. Once you finish your cleanup, count how many points each person has. The person with the most points at the end wins!

Trash Bin Map

Take some time to explore the area you’ll be cleaning up. How many garbage bins do you see? Are there any bins for recycling? Are they easy to access? You might notice some connections between the bins and the litter you find laying around!

Picture this: it’s the end of a delicious meal and you’ve licked your plate clean. But UGH, now it’s time to do the dishes! Well, if you’ve got a dishwasher, this is the Eco-Activity for you! We’ll show you that when it comes to dishes, being lazy is the greener way to go!

Did you know that using your dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes by hand? In fact, Energy Star certified dishwashers use 15 L of water every cycle—you’d use the same amount by just running your tap for about 2 minutes!

Most dishwashers are powerful enough to take food residue off dishes so washing them beforehand is unnecessary and a waste of water. Just choose a quality detergent that is formulated to skip the pre-rinse. You should also make sure to not overcrowd the dishwasher. If there are too many dishes close together, the jets can’t clean all the surfaces.

Run your dishwasher during off-peak hours when the demand for energy is lower. Some energy companies will even give you a discount! Check with your energy company to see when your on- and off-peak hours are.

Unless you need the dishes right away, try turning off the heat-dry setting on your dishwasher. This means your dishes will drip dry on their own, and that’s energy-free!

Don’t have a dishwasher? No problem! There are tons of tips online that can help you be a green dishwasher too! Work with your parents or guardians to make a plan!

With summer in full swing, we love getting outside and exploring our wonderful forests. There’s something so lovely about seeing the beautiful trees and their leaves dancing in the wind. Wouldn’t it be great if you could bring home a tidbit from your adventures to keep forever? Guess what…you can, and it’s pretty easy!

For today’s Eco-Activity, we’ll be making some lovely leafy fossils!

• Head outside and get searching for the coolest leaves around! Make sure they’re super veiny or thick needles—those ones will look the best as fossils.

• Once you’re happy with your collection, make sure there aren’t any hidden critters, and then head back inside.

• To make your salt dough, combine the salt and flour in a bowl, then slowly mix in the water. You probably won’t need all of it, just enough for the dough to feel like playdough.

• Roll or press out your dough to be about 1 cm thick, in any shapes you’d like. You could use a cookie cutter on your rolled out dough, or split your dough into pieces and flatten each one.

• Ask an adult to preheat the oven to the lowest setting.

• Firmly press the back of each leaf onto your soon-to-be fossils, making sure the whole surface is touching the dough to get the best imprint!

• Peel off the leaves, and place your fossils on the baking sheet. Bake for 1-2 hours, depending on your oven.

• Once your fossils have cooled, all that’s left to do is decorate and show them off!

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day! It’s a day to celebrate the cultural richness and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Metis people!

Anyone hungry? We have a simple food staple for you to try: fry bread! Never heard of it? It’s usually called “Bannock”! Indigenous communities across Turtle Island (or North America as you might know it) each have their own take. Some use berries, others wild plants, wild rice. Try out this recipe adapted from a traditional Blackfoot recipe.

Here’s how you make it:

1. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

2. Slowly add the water – juuust enough to get everything wet – while mixing it into a big ball of dough.

3. Turn it out onto a floured surface and knead for a minute or two, then split the dough into round discs – about the size and shape of a hockey puck!

4. Fry it in an oiled pan for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown.

Cut up your fry bread while it’s still warm and serve with your favourite jam or wild berries. Enjoy!

Where do bees go on vacation? The bee-ch! It’s pollinator season, and our hardworking friends have been keeping busy. After a big day of pollinating far and wide, they’ll need a place to relax… so why not treat them to something special? For today’s Eco-Activity, we’re making a bee hotel!

For today’s Eco-Activity, we’re creating a mini nature reserve for all those helpful creepy crawlers living in your yard, on your balcony, or outside your building.

Check on the dish daily to make sure the water stays full and clean.

1. Prepare your container

• Make sure your container is clean and dry.

• If it has a lid or spout, ask an adult to help cut off the top part.

• Decorate the outside of your container. You could paint it, cover it in construction paper and stickers… anything you’d like!

2. Craft the bee tubes

• Cut your paper into strips that are as wide as your container is deep, and long enough to wrap around your pencil at least 5 times.

• Wrap one paper around your pencil to make a tube. You can use some tape to help it keep its shape. When you take it off the pencil, it should look like a big, thick straw.

• Continue to make tubes until you can fill most of your container with them.

3. Make your bee hotel

• Place the tubes inside your hotel. If you don’t have enough tubes to fill it, you can place twigs in any empty spaces.

• Cut two pieces of string. They should each be long enough to wrap around your hotel twice, with enough left over for you to tie around a branch.

• Wrap and tie one of your strings around the top of your hotel. Do the same with the second one at the bottom. You can add a little glue if you want to make them extra secure.

• Find a nice sunny place for your hotel. Hang it up horizontally so the opening is facing you.

Now, you wait for bee visitors. You might get a few special guests before you know it!

Some people think bugs are icky, but at Earth Rangers, we think they’re awesome! Often we only think about them when they show up unexpectedly in our homes and give us a fright, but the reality is, we’re trampling all over their homes every day.

For today’s Eco-Activity, we’re creating a mini nature reserve for all those helpful creepy crawlers living in your yard, on your balcony, or outside your building.

Grab some native plants and plant them in a sunny spot in the garden or in a planter. If you already have plants in your yard, you can just use that area for your nature reserve. Easy Peasy!

Add a shallow dish of water with small stones in it so tiny creatures can drink or bathe. Try and place the water in a shaded area beneath the plants so the water stays cool from the shade.

Check on the dish daily to make sure the water stays full and clean.

Monitor the area so you can see what types of insects are using it. If you have a magnifying glass, definitely use it!

That’s it—you’re now officially an insect landlord!
