Wonderful winter wreaths
Time:60+ min Difficulty:Hard

A great way to add a pop of colour into wintery white scenes around your home is to hang up a wreath or two. And the best thing about them is you can make them yourself, using natural materials!

Here’s what you need:

  • Evergreen branches (birch, pine, etc…)
  • Floral wire
  • Paper, foam or felt sheets
Tip: Upcycle an old piece of paper or newspaper instead of using something new
  • Natural materials to decorate (Pinecones, dried leaves, flowers, sprig of berries, etc…)
  • Optional: Bows and ribbons
  • Optional: Battery-operated string lights
  • Help from an adult

Here’s how you make it:

Step 1: Collect branches from the forest floor, or cut some branches from the trees on your property for fresh scents – they can be from evergreens with lots of needles, birch trees for different colours, or really any other tree! The best branches are ones that are skinny and easily bend without snapping.

Step 2: Bunch together several sticks at the base of the branch and use floral wire to secure them to a circle of sturdier wire or a wreathe form (easily found at a local craft or dollar store).

Step 3: Continue this process until you’ve filled your circle, making sure to use the “fluffy” tail end of each bundle to hide the wiring of the previous one.

Step 4: Now decorate it! Here are some ideas to weave through the branches and make it truly your own:

  • Cut snowflakes out using newspaper or scrap paper
  • Collect some pinecones and add them as-is, or add glitter or paint to give them extra personality
  • A sprig of berries or slices of dried fruit can add a pop of colour
  • Make bows and ribbons out of worn-out clothing by cutting long strips of fabric and weaving them through your branches
  • Add battery-operated string lights to give it some self-powered twinkle at night

TIP: Remember to reuse! If you’re using lots of fresh evergreen sprigs, even if they do dry out before next year, you can always replace what doesn’t keep for another year of proudly displaying your sustainable creation!

Enjoy the beauty that that comes with a fresh nip in the air!

Helpful Bird Homework Organizer
Time:60 min Difficulty:Medium

Your homework will be im-peck-ably organized!

Here’s what you need:

  • An empty cereal box
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Acrylic paint in blue, green and white
  • Paintbrush
  • Cardstock or construction paper scraps in a variety of colors
  • Glue stick or white glue

Here’s how you make it:

Step 1: On the wide side of the cereal box, measure 15 cm from the bottom of the box.  Make a mark with your pen. Turn your box around to the other wide side and do the same thing.

Step 2: Use your ruler to draw a line from the top of your cereal box on an angle down to the mark you made. Do this on both sides. Draw a line across the short side of the box connecting the marks.

Step 3: Cut along all the lines. You should now have a box that looks like this:

Step 4: Paint your box so that the bottom half is the ground (in green) and the top half is the sky (in blue). Use the white paint to add clouds.  Let it dry.

Step 5: Cut out birds from your scraps of paper. Glue them all over your box! Need some feathery inspo? Check out this excellent blog entry!

Step 5: Whenever you get homework, put it in the organizer. That way, you’ll always know where your assignments are!

You’re going to feel like a lucky duck if you get your homework done on time!

What’s that we hear? Is it your stomach?!
Slide on over, we’ve got some super snacks to buzz about!

Here’s what you need:

  • Cherry or Grape Tomatoes
  • Cucumber
  • Chive
  • Cream Cheese
  • Help from an adult

Here’s how you make it:

Step 1: Start by cutting a few small cucumber slices. You’ll need these for your bugs’ wings and shells.

Next, halve the remaining cucumber, and slice it into long strands.

Step 2: Use a spoon to remove all the seeds from the cucumber. After that, spoon some cream cheese along your cucumber strands.

Step 3: Ask an adult to help make two tiny holes in some of your cherry/grape tomatoes. Slide the chives in to create your bug’s head!

Step 4: Lay your bug’s head on the edge of the cucumber. Next, decide if you want to make a snail or a fly. They’ve got different instructions:

SNAIL: Lay a cucumber slide sideways and there you have it: a shell!
FLY: Add 2-3 more cherry/grape tomatoes behind the head. Halve your cucumber slides in two, and slide them in on each side of the cucumber to create wings!

That’s it! Not so bizarre after all? Enjoy~

Grow Your Own Greens
Time:Time: 30 minutes to start, then 10-14 days to wait! Difficulty:Easy

Growing greens from scraps is a great way to practice regenerative farming, right in your own home!

Here’s what you need:

  • A lettuce core (any kind) cut 5-7 cm from the bottom, or a few 10-15 cm herb stems (basil, mint, and oregano work best) with lower leaves, buds, and flowers removed
  • Lettuce: a shallow bowl or container and four toothpicks
Herbs: A clean glass or jar for each stem
  • Water
  • A sunny spot
  • A grownup’s help

Here’s how you make it:

Step 1: Set your plant into a container that will help them grow!

Lettuce: Place the core in a container and insert toothpicks on four sides to hold it in place.
Herbs:  Place each stem in a glass or jar.

Step 2: Fill your container with water.

Lettuce: Add just enough water to the container to cover the bottom third of the lettuce.

Herbs: Fill each glass or jar with water — just don’t submerge the leaves!

Step 3: Find a sunny spot!

Lettuce and Herbs: Place in a sunny spot, like a ledge or windowsill. Check each day and add more water to replace any water that has evaporated. Replace the water completely every few days.

Step 4: Watch your plant grow!
Lettuce
: Within a few days, new leaves will sprout from the center of the lettuce core. In 10-12 days, the lettuce should be tall enough to use. When your lettuce is ready, add it to a salad or sandwich!

Herbs: Wait for the roots to grow — this can take a couple of days to a couple of weeks. Once you see roots, just snip off leaves as you need them!

Want to keep things growing?
Once you use all your fresh lettuce, you can regrow it again using the same instructions. And of course, your herbs will keep growing as long as you keep the roots in fresh water. Even better? Plant your lettuce and herbs indoors in flower pots filled with potting soil. That way, they can get some nutrients, which makes them more nutritious to eat!

Mushroom Spore Prints
Time:10 min Difficulty:Easy

Ever wondered how mushroom spores spread? Find out how, and get some cool prints out of it!

Here’s what you need:

  • A large mushroom
  • A sharp knife
  • A piece of white paper
  • Water
  • A box that will fit over the mushroom
  • Gloves, if you’re handling a wild mushroom
  • A grownup’s help
  • Optional: Hairspray

Here’s how you make it:

Step 1: Buy a fresh mushroom or pick one outside (if you’re picking one outside, wear gloves while handling it).

Step 2: Cut off the mushroom stem to expose its gills, the ribbed flesh on the underside of the mushroom cap.

Step 3: Place the mushroom cap gill-side down on a piece of paper.

Step 4: Add a few drops of water to the top of the mushroom cap — this makes the spores drop. Cover the mushroom cap with an upside-down box and leave it overnight.

Step 5: The next day, gently lift the box and the mushroom cap. You should see a beautiful spore print on the paper underneath!

Want to preserve your spore print? Spray it with hairspray and let it dry.

Take your nature explorations to the next level! Snap some awesome pictures of mushrooms and other awesome fungus for “Backyard Biologist” contest! Remember, the more creative and descriptive your submission is, the more points you’ll earn! Good luck!

These giraffes go absolutely bananas

Here’s what you need:

  • Bananas
  • 1 cup of chocolate chips (or chocolate spread)
  • Almond, or pretzel pieces
  • Something for ears, like raisins, or bits of carrot

Here’s how you make it:

Step 1: Halve your bananas for the body.

Step 2: Put some chocolate spread into a sealable plastic bag.
If you don’t have any chocolate spread, make your own by asking a grown-up to help melt the chocolate chips. Please wait until it’s room temperature before putting it into the bag.

Step 3: Cut one of the bottom corners of the chocolate bag and carefully make tiny dots on your banana.

OPTIONAL: If you want extra-chocolaty giraffes, you can use the spread to stick chocolate chips to the banana!

Step 4: On the side of your banana, push in an almond or pretzel piece.

Step 5: Cut two little holes at the top of the banana. Slide in your raisins or bits of carrot. These are your giraffe horns (actually called Ossicones). Add some chocolate eyes, and you have yourself a banana giraffe!

That’s it — your super sweets are ready to go!

Bug Observation Pod
Time:30 mins Difficulty:Easy

Ever wanted to observe a bug up close? It’s easy! All you need to do is craft a bug observation pod and go to your nearest outdoor space!

Here’s what you need:

  • A big clear plastic bottle (like a juice bottle)
  • Breathable material, like mesh or cheesecloth
  • Duct tape
  • Natural materials like bark, moss, pine cones, and small sticks (anything bugs might like to crawl on)
  • A box cutter
  • Scissors
  • A grownup’s help

Here’s how you make it:

Step 1: Have your grownup use a box cutter to cut a rectangular opening in the side of the bottle. Use scissors to trim a piece of mesh slightly larger than the opening.

Step 2: Fill the bottle with grass, leaves, rocks, sticks, and anything else you think bugs would like to crawl on.

Step 3: Use the duct tape to tape the screen mesh over the opening.

Step 4: Unscrew the top. It’s time to look around and collect some bugs!

Step 5: When you’re finished collecting, screw the cap back on. It’s time to observe! What kinds of bugs did you find? How do they move? How do they act together?

REMEMBER: When you’re done observing, gently return the bugs to their natural habitat!

Take your bug observation pod to the next level! Snap some awesome pictures of those who visit your bug hotel for the “Backyard Biologist” contest! Remember, the more creative and descriptive your submission is, the more points you’ll earn! Good luck!
