By reusing, repairing, repurposing, or recycling, we can use as little raw materials as possible and reduce our carbon footprint. It’s all about using resources wisely and finding ways to use the leftover materials.

In 2020, Canada successfully diverted 27.5% of its waste, which is an increase of almost 50% since 2002, This is great, but we still have a lot of work to do to reduce the remaining 72.5% that is sent to landfills or incinerated.

There are five key areas of unsustainable consumption: Plastics, Food, Aluminum, Steel, and Cement. With circular economy strategies, we can eliminate about 9.3 billion tons of emissions, which is the equivalent to all the transported related emissions globally.

There are ways to create a more circular economy everywhere!

With these projects, you get to plan an event for your community, where people can come together and trade their ill-fitting clothes, sports equipment they no longer use, or other items in good condition they no longer have use for. Check out Lana’s event!

DIY Workshops

These projects are great for those who love to teach! You can encourage other to be more sustainable by teaching them new sills like how to make new items out of old (think reusable shopping bags out of an old t-shirt), how to create sustainable products (think beeswax wraps or cleaning supplies), or even how to repair a bike!

Waste Re-route

Did you know that some items can’t go in a regular landfill and might actually be dangerous if they end up in one? You can divert waste, so it can’t harm the environment. Batteries, electronics, paint, markers, and many other items can be properly disposed of, but only if someone takes the time to do so. Check out a few examples of projects teens have done!

We’ve got an egg-celent penguin pal for you!
Waddle this way for this Arctic-inspired craft.

• An egg carton
• Orange, black and white paint or markers
• Googly eyes
• Glue
• Scissors
• Craft foam or colorful paper
  TIP: If you don’t have either of these, you can paint some cardboard or scrap paper instead!

Step 1: Cut out an individual “egg holder” from your egg carton.

Step 2: Glue the rim of two cups together to create your penguin’s body

Step 3: Give your penguin pal some feet by gluing the bottom of a cup to the bottom of its body.

Once dry, cut that bottom cup to create little feet.

Step 4: Time to paint! Start by painting their body black, then adding a white belly and orange feet!

Step 5: Once the paint is dry, cut a small triangle from your foam/paper and glue them just above your penguin’s belly. Add some googly eyes, and you’ve got yourself a new penguin pal!

We’ve got a tasty tree-t for you!
Why not some pine tree cookies to spruce your snacks up?

• 1 ½ cup flour
• 1 cup sugar
• 1/2 cup of butter
• 1 large egg
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• Green food colouring (or matcha powder as a natural alternative)
• Rolling pin
• An adult to help with baking

Step 1: Add all your dry ingredients in a big bowl and add the eggs, butter and your green food colouring (or matcha powder). Mix until you form a dough.

Step 2: Divide your dough into two pieces. Roll it out on a board with a rolling pin.

Step 3: Cut triangle shapes out of your dough. Out of those shapes, remove 4 tiny triangles on each side. Lay your tree cookie pieces on a tray.

Chill the tray in the fridge for about 15-20 mins.

Step 4: Ask an adult for help to preheat the oven to 350°F.

When they are ready, put the cookies in the oven and bake for 8-10 minutes. You’ll know they’re ready when the edges of your cookies are browned.

When there are no flowers or fresh cut grass swirling around outside, coming home to a burst of cozy scents can be a real treat in the middle of the winter. Why not make your own at-home scents?

• Pot, mason jar, or shallow heat-proof bowl
• Water

• Fresh needles from your favourite evergreen tree (pine, spruce, ect.)
• A piece of tree stump (the sappier the better)
• Cinnamon sticks
• Cloves
• Raw cranberries
• Orange slices or peels
• Dried or fresh peppermint leaves (hint: peppermint tea is often pure peppermint leaves)
• Dried or fresh rosemary
• Apple slices
• Cardamom
• Vanilla extract
• Grated nutmeg

Gather all your ingredients! You can pick any from the list, or come up with some of your own.

Put your ingredients into a heat-proof bowl (or a pot or mason jar) and fill it halfway with water.

Place this in a warm place (safely away from any pets or clumsy family members).
Somewhere like the top of a radiator, over part of a heating vent, or on the stove on the lowest setting if you’re using a pot.

Sit back and enjoy the woody winter scents that fill your home!
