How to make your animal ears!

Did You Know?

  • River otters live in aquatic habitats across North America and feed on fish, frogs, crayfish, turtles, urchins, insects and small mammals.
  • These furry critters are extremely playful and are often seen sliding down riverbanks or rafted together with other otter friends!
  • River otters are also skilled swimmers - they can even hold their breath for up to 8 minutes while under water.
  • Unfortunately, river otters face threats within their environment owing to water pollution and contamination.

Take Action to Protect River Otters

The best way to help River Otters is to conserve their natural habitat - this means protecting natural areas like watersheds from development and agriculture. It's also important to keep our water systems clean so that pollutants don't end up in our rivers where river otters live.

By completing ‘Eco Activity #37: Otter’s eye view’ you can observe a biologist’s amazing footage of river otters in the Yukon! Follow along to watch these important animals in their natural habitat and begin to understand why we must protect them.

If you would like to take your action a step further, become an Earth Ranger to adopt your very own river otter! , Adopting a river otter contributes to supporting the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) as they work to protect the Saskatchewan River Delta, home to hundreds of plant and animal species like the river otter. Click here to learn more about the project!

Become an Earth Ranger to access the Shoreline Saver Mission or adopt your very own river otter! With this mission you will be saving shorelines one by one! The Shoreline Saver Mission encourages you to find a nearby shoreline in need of a litter cleanup.  Water pollution takes on many forms - garbage being one of them!  This pollution has terrible effects on the entire ecosystem and the wildlife living there.  So, get a team of friends and family to help clean up your local shoreline, Earth Rangers!
